This is a good place to start:

Do they *have* to drive a pickup (ie, could they occasionally borrow
a pickup in lieu of driving one all the time)?

Would just towing capacity work for them (ie, could they use a
trailer instead of the bed in their pickup)?

Just wondering. Sometimes people can actually get by with something
different then they are used to, and make big improvements by doing so.

There are several vehicles with 4WD or AWD that have pretty low
emissions and get decent mileage (especially compared to a pickup),
and have some (not great, but some) tow capacity.
