Subject: [SustainableTompkins] 5/16 Interactive Climate Justice Roadshow in Hector
Rising Tide North America Climate Justice Roadshow
Hello! I'm writing to invite you an event tomorrow night on Seneca Lake -
e're from rising tide and have been traveling all around the country
oing popular education workshops on climate justice. Our goal is link
ogether many existing groups and networks to build grassroots responses
o climate chaos with a strong focus on privileges and
ocial/environmental justice
summary:
hat: The Rising Tide Climate Action Tour
hen: Wednesday May 16th, 6pm dish to pass, 7pm presentation
here: Wisdom's Goldenrod, Hector NY (directions at bottom)
hy: Because we need to do something about climate change while
onfronting all other social justice issues
Rising Tide (www.risingtidenorthamerica.org) is an international network
hat has existed for 6-7 years but was born in the US just over a year
go.
n this tour we've been stopping in colleges, churches, community centers,
nd other places that don't start with 'c' to do an interactive
resentation on collectively combating catastrophic climate change.
e've been all overthe eastern united states and now we're in Ithaca.
Our 'shindigs' are usually between 2 and 3 hours and involve a mixture of
iscussions, slideshows, interactive exercises, and live music. We cover
wide range of topics within the umbrella of climate justice, which
nvolves applying the principles of environmental justice to climate
hange. Some of the topics we cover include indigenous resistance to
olonization, resistance to the fossil fuel industry (communities fighting
ining or power plants), debunking false solutions to climate change (ex.
iofuels and ethanol, nuclear, carbon trading, etc), grassroots disaster
elief, and addressing climate change as a mental health issue.
A central goal of ours is to help link together the many people and groups
orking on a range of issues around community sustainability, but with a
ritical look at how "whiteness" and privilege undermine the goals of these
ovements. We hope to recenter the debate on climate change to be an
ssue of radical social justice, where the only real "solution" is a
omplete social transformation that addresses all injustice and
ppression.
If you can make it on short notice we'd love to see you there, to engage
n conversation and share our collective knowledge. It's about a 40
inute drive from ithaca, so please carpool if you plan on coming!
ove, rhythm, and revolution,
