THE STORY OF SHOREBANK
Ronald Grzywinski, chairman and co-founder, ShoreBank Corporation, Chicago
Ronald Grzywinskiís career in helping to
transform underserved urban and rural
neighborhoods into vibrant communities has
inspired a worldwide community development
banking movement. His experiences and
observations of the disparities in economic
opportunities between African American and white
communities drive his commitment to positive
social change.
Mary Houghton, president and co-founder, ShoreBank Corporation, Chicago
Mary A. Houghton was instrumental in the creation
of ShoreBank Pacific, the nationís first
commercial bank devoted to environmentally
responsible lending. She also developed the
bankís offering of socially responsible accounts,
in which funds are earmarked for local
development. Houghton has built ShoreBankís
consulting organizations, whose services range
from financial literary education programs in
low-income communities to assistance for other
financial institutions in transitioning
economies.
Bill Myers, chief executive officer (retired June
2007), Alternatives Federal Credit Union, Ithaca
ShoreBank Corporation is America's first
community development and environmental bank
holding company. A $2 billion company, has
consulting services around the world. Since its
inception in 1973, ShoreBank has been a pioneer.
It was created to demonstrate that a regulated
bank could be instrumental in revitalizing the
communities being avoided by other financial
institutions. In 2000, ShoreBank expanded its
focus to include environmental issues, believing
that communities cannot achieve true prosperity
without also attaining environmental well-being.
