Environment Global climate change presents a serious national security threat that could impact Americans at home, affect United States military operations, and heighten global tensions, a new study released by the Center for Naval Analysis argues. Funded in part by the Rockefeller Family Fund and the Bipartisan Policy Center, the report, National Security and the Threat of Climate Change (68 pages, PDF), describes climate change as a "threat multiplier" that makes already challenging situations even more problematic. For instance, shortages of food and water in developing countries could contribute to the collapse of weak governments, while decreased salinity of the oceans could make sonar less effective.
