Gay Nicholson's efforts on behalf of our community -- and the planet -- have
just been recognized. She'll receive the Debra S. Newman '02 Community
Recognition Award.
Congratulations to the hard-working, fiercely intelligent, deeply caring,
wonderful woman who has been the guiding light of ST. Nobody deserves this
award more!
Let's all turn out and show our support for Gay and the tradition of
recognizing community volunteers. It's at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 at the
Women's Community Building. See the press release below.
We love you, Gay! Bravo!

Cornell Tradition recognizes efforts of Ithaca volunteer Gay Nicholson
Nicholson earns award for outstanding community service
ITHACA, N.Y. — Gay Nicholson of Ithaca will be the recipient of The Cornell
Tradition’s seventh annual Debra S. Newman ’02 Community Recognition Award
for her volunteer efforts. Nicholson will receive her award at the National
Volunteer Week Day of Service, a collaboration between The Cornell Tradition
and OnSite Volunteer Services. The event will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday,
April 26 at the Women’s Community Building, and is designed to be
community-wide celebration of volunteerism in the greater Ithaca community. For more
information about the Day of Service and to get involved, contact Kirsten
Gabriel at _tradition at cornell.edu_ (mailto:tradition at cornell.edu) .
The Newman award is presented by The Cornell Tradition, an alumni-endowed
fellowship program for outstanding undergraduates who are dedicated to work,
service and scholarship, and one of the three programs that constitute The
Cornell Commitment.
Nicholson received the Newman award as a result of her strong commitment to
community service and leadership, including her work with Sustainable
Tompkins, a coalition she helped create in 2004. Nicholson has served as program
coordinator for the organization at its founding, and continues to further the
organization’s mission by facilitating workshops and study circles, convening
the Cayuga Sustainability Council, and much more. More information about
Sustainable Tompkins can be found at _www.sustainabletompkins.org_
(http://www.sustainabletompkins.org/) .
The Cornell Tradition Community Recognition Award was renamed in 2002 in
honor of the late Debra Newman ’02, a graduate of The Cornell Tradition, who was
killed in a tragic automobile accident the year she graduated. For more
