For those of you who are interested in communal cooking, even on a small scale, I recommend reading Dolores Hayden's book "Grand Domestic Revolution."? 

It chronicles a number of efforts in the late 1800s early 1900s by feminists and other progressive thinkers such as Ebenezer Howard (Garden Cities of Tomorrow) to develop common kitchens for on a scale ranging from multiple family housing cooperatives to entire communities.

Hayden also does a good job of documenting the development of the American near fetish-like attraction?for living in single-family detached homes.

It's a required reading in just about every one of my land use and urban planning workshop courses.
