Artist Wanted: Schoolyard Wetlands Habitat Art
Posted by: Jim Benz, jbenz at farbrook.org
Deadline: May 1, 2008
Far Brook School is a small independent nursery-eighth grade school in
the suburbs of New York City (25 min. by train). We believe in the
power of teaching through the arts, process balanced with product, depth
over breadth and that even young children can understand the metaphors
and symbolism in great works of art. We have a 2 acre wetlands habitat
on campus that we are beginning to integrate into the curriculum at
nearly every grade level. We have obtained permits to build gathering
areas, pathways and an observation platform. Currently, we are
investigating having an artist work with groups of children of all ages to create a
work or works of environmental art that would augment our habitat and
bring meaning to the children's interaction with the site and the
environment. This project could be a one day shot or last over several
visits. The school has been supplied with a special projects endowment which
would help fund this endeavor.
