ECONOMICS
part of the Winter Weekends PDC
Saturday, March 1
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
$50 each class/$150 for four (see schedule online)
As the gap between rich and poor widens, finances and money become a
difficult issue both in terms of scale and possibility. This module will
explore our personal relationship to the world of money, and discuss how
permaculture design can help us create more sustainable financial
choices and happier futures.
GOVERNANCE
part of the Winter Weekends PDC
Sunday, March 2
9:00 am - 4:00pm
$50 each class/$150 for four (see schedule online)
Is there a method to the madness? This topic is most often left to far
off politicians but is rooted ultimately in people and place for
beneficial functionality. We will take a look at organizing tools,
community structures, and bioregional principles to understand the types
of possibilities we can create for the future.
DESIGNING AN AGROFORESTRY SITE WITH MAPLE SUGARING
Saturday, March 15
1:00 - 3:00 pm
Fee: Sliding scale $5 - $15
Maple Sugaring is a regenerative practice that can be easily combined
with mushroom cultivation, timber management, and edible and medicinal
mushroom production. Come enjoy a tour of our budding agroforestry
project led by Land Use Manager Steve Gabriel who will share designs and
engage participants with tools to help in designing their own forest stands.
WATER
part of the Winter Weekends PDC
Saturday, March 15
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
$50 each class/$150 for four (see schedule online)
Water is a necessary element to all life on the planet, and yet most
humans on the plant lack access to clean water while “developed”
countries pollute and waste it as if there were no tomorrow. We will
look at strategies for the capture and storage of water as a way to
revitalize watersheds, prepare for drought conditions, and ensure the
continuation of this precious resource.
WASTE TREATMENT
part of the Winter Weekends PDC
Sunday, March 16
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
$50 each class/$150 for four (see schedule online)
In our culture waste is treated as a nuance to be dealt with in the most
removed ways possible; conventional methods of sewage treatment and
water purification also host a number of detrimental consequences. In
this module we will explore our attitudes of waste and discuss
strategies that can lead us down the path to a zero waste lifestyle.
2008 MAPLEFEST
Saturday, March 29 & Sunday, March 30
10am - 4pm
Fee: $12 Adults, $8 Children, $25 Families (members receive $2 off
admission)
One of the great treasures of New York State is maple syrup! At Cayuga
Nature Center, we have turned that treasure in a two day festival
celebrating syrup, community and the great outdoors. It’s called
MapleFest; the annual festival is now in its 29th year. This year’s
event features live local music from over ten groups; boiling and
tapping demonstrations, educational pieces about the history of maple
syrup, arts and crafts, entertainers, a firetruck, live animals, and a
local foods pancake breakfast!
Cayuga Creamery will be on hand for refreshments, along with other local
food and craft vendors. Live entertainment will be provided by the
Wayward Girls, Zela Zola, the El Caminos, the Native Earthling Band, and
other local musicians. There will be hourly tours of our sugarbush
trail, which tells the story of sugaring from Native Americans to
present day production systems.
ABOUT
Cayuga Nature Center (www.cayuganaturecenter.org) (CNC) is a place to
explore the wonders of nature. We invite you to visit our collection of
over 40 live Animals, climb around Treetops, our six story observational
tree-house, or simply enjoy the outdoors while walking our five miles of
interpretive trails, which meander through a mature deciduous forest,
along gorges and streams, and past a variety of native plants and wildlife.
Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute (www.fingerlakespermaculture.org) is
a project of CNC providing affordable and experiential learning events
in the Finger Lakes bioregion of New York State. We offer two annual
Permaculture Design Certification courses, monthly brunches featuring
local farmers, and a variety of other programming for children and adults.
