Dear Friends--Most of us are aware of the notion of Peak Oil, but as
several writers in the field have pointed out, all non-renewable resources
will each have their own peak. One of the first to peak is helium. We are
probably well past the peak and the consequences is potentially disastrous
to certain niche industries, from pure research to the space shuttle. This
will certainly have a local impact as lots of liquid helium is used in
mission critical devices at Cornell and, perhaps, to a lesser extent at IC
and a few local businesses. For more information see the URL
below. Please excuse any cross postings. Have a happy and healthy new
year preparing for the Energy Decent. Tom

P I thank you for printing this e-mail only if it is necessary

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs."

The World Commission on Environment and Development,
Gro Harlem Brundtland
Our Common Future, Oxford University Press, 1987

MY NOTE: Sustainable development does not mean "sustainable growth" as
growth per se is not sustainable. And the term "sustainable" has to mean
"for a very long time" (A. Bartlett).
