[SustainableTompkins] water heating

I haven't encountered info about these waterheaters in decades and in 
those days they were viewed as being installed right at the place of 
use, so that a regular northamerican house would need several. That 
would, of course, have eliminated the lag in hot watter arriving, too. 
What are the considerations that make the whole-house on-demand heaters 
preferable?
