[SustainableTompkins] water heating

re: point of use: In my case (4 kitchens, 4 bathrooms, rambling
house), I would have needed too many point-of-use heaters. At the
time, the cost per unit was still pretty high, space wasn't always
conveniently available in all units, and there were concerns about
reliability with hard water. So, with my plumber's advice, I went
with an indirect coil on my boiler.

However I would consider point of use heaters if I were installing a
new system in that house at this point in time, given improvements in
the products (and a wider range of options), greater familiarity on
the part of installers, and especially given how long it takes water
to get from the basement to the second floor. Also, I have a much
improved water filtration system.

BTW, my very hard water never affected the Munchkin boiler (I assume
because all the openings in a boiler and inirect coil are fairly
large).

Looking forward, I appreciate this discussion because I have recently
moved into a duplex in a housing complex, and the water comes from
the other side via a ventilated crawl space. It takes over minute to
get warm water when I have it running full force, let alone hot
water. We are looking into NYSERDA programs for housing complexes,
and this discussion will help us know what water heating options to
consider.
