Tom is correct. Putting a water heater near a faucet location would  
require not only the heater  and water pipes but probably a gas line  
and the thing would also need to be vented. It is possible but it  
would make it more expensive. Mine is in our basement. It vents with  
the furnace up the chimney. It takes a little longer to get hot water  
upstairs. But we are used to it now and don't think anything of it.  
It is great.

I turn off our furnace pilot light in the summer and I think our gas  
bill for hot water and the stove is about $20 a month. That is for  
five people. In the winter we can heat most of the time with wood.  
Last month our gas bill was estimated at 68 therms for $100. I think  
that was a little high. I should know soon what it is this month.
