I finally read through all the emails with regarding the hot water heaters.
It's something I would definitely consider, so I compiled the most important
parts from the emails. I thought I would share what I compiled with this
group. Thanks to all who sent out information!

I always though the best way to heat water would be to use a solar thermal
system. You can see a great website for pricing a system (most seem around
$2000 after the rebates, paybacks immediately with a 15 year loan) at
www.findsolar.com. Then after this pre-heater, an instantaneous heater could
be used to step up the temperature to whatever temp is needed.

Instant Water Heaters
Compiled from discussions on Sustainable Tompkins Listserv
January, 2008

.	Takes a few seconds longer (depending on length of pipes)
Distant faucets can use a booster unit (http://www.chilipepperapp.com/ or
http://www.houseneeds.com/shop/HeatingProducts/WaterHeating/ariston/AristonI
ndex.htm or http://www.electricwaterheaters.com/powerstream/index.htm)
.	If you have a lot of minerals in your water it will require periodic
maintenance every couple of years to keep it running smoothly.
.	Some newer models designed to flush with vinegar to dissolve mineral
build-up
.	Temperature can be controlled by a thermostat -

html
.	Some units allow for different temperature settings at different
locations (look for Rinnai and Bosch models)
.	Initial cost is 3-4 times more, but energy savings is around 50%
.	$300 Federal tax credit (see http://www.energy.gov/taxbreaks.htm if
energy factor is 0.80)

Things to consider when buying:
.	Ignition options - pilot (least efficient), spark (better),
hydro-ignition (harder to find, more expensive)
.	Thermostatic Control - works for pre-heaters to regulate water
temperature instead of gas output
