Very poignant questions! Here's my two interpretations for short answers to
these questions (mostly in jest, but with some truth):
The current model (disclaimer: this is not really what I think are the
answers!):
1. How can we best prepare our children for the future? By offsetting
their projected carbon usage with carbon credits
2. What does sustainability look like to you? How do we get there? Buying
a hybrid SUV, buying bamboo cutting boards and changing a light bulb to CFL
3. How do humans need to adapt to survive the changes predicted for this
century? Learn how to listen to the facts from TV news instead of the
liberal propaganda from those democrats
4. How do we shift from "Me" to "We" on both the local and global levels?
Instead of being selfish and buying goods for myself, I should go to Walmart
and buy gifts for everyone!
5. How can you, as Gandhi said, be the change that you want to see in the
world? If I buy a hybrid, that means everyone will!
6. What kind of economic structures can best support a shift to
sustainable living? We need to subsidize clean coal and hydrogen power so
that we can use those sustainable sources of energy
7. How should we re-invent the political process so that people feel that
they have a voice? Change the laws so that George Bush can have a 3rd term
8. What kind of leadership does the world need now? We need leaders like
Bush that know how to say no to unreasonable liberal propaganda like Kyoto
Protocol and CAFÉ standards.
9. How can we balance our personal needs with the most pressing needs of
our community and the larger world? The larger world has so much focus these
days on large issues that it's easy to forget how important I am so I should
starting thinking more about myself
10. What can we do to reduce or eliminate violence in the world? Since the
violence is in places like Africa and doesn't affect me, I don't need to
worry about it much
A much more sustainable focus (although it seems fairly infeasible):
1. How can we best prepare our children for the future? By many people
choosing not to have children to reduce global population
2. What does sustainability look like to you? How do we get there? It
looks like abandoning most industrial practices and relearning how to live
off the land as a community
3. How do humans need to adapt to survive the changes predicted for this
century? We need to relearn how to use tools, and design for our needs not
our wants for convenience.
4. How do we shift from "Me" to "We" on both the local and global levels?
Create eco-village type communities where working, eating, and recreation
can easily be done as a local community.
5. How can you, as Gandhi said, be the change that you want to see in the
world? Make a model of myself by using significantly less energy and
resources and showing others how to do the same
6. What kind of economic structures can best support a shift to
sustainable living? Local currency supporting our local economy
7. How should we re-invent the political process so that people feel that
they have a voice? Bring more rights to people instead of corporation
controlling politics
8. What kind of leadership does the world need now? Trustworthy
leadership capable of empowering communities to meet our true needs
9. How can we balance our personal needs with the most pressing needs of
our community and the larger world? Personal needs could be met by the
community supporting it's individuals.
10. What can we do to reduce or eliminate violence in the world? By making
society more community-based, our needs can be met through peaceful ways
since we won't be focused on being better or having more than anyone else.
