If you would like to help be a part of a Non-Violence workshop at Auburn
Prison (4o min N of Ithaca) or know anyone who would, Please look into this
program. AVP- Alternatives to violence was founded by Quakers (what's not to
like about Quakers?) And is a wonderful opportunity to meet and help those
that are locked away in prisons, and to contribute something positive to a
society that does not yet understand the value of prevention and
rehabilitation.
I participated in this workshop and it's only the fact that I live in TX
that keeps me from going back. Just write/call Jill (contact below) fill out
simple paperwork for Auburn Prison a few weeks beforehand, carpool, and
spend a weekend improving yourself and others. It can change your life, or
at least part of it - it did for me. If you have any questions, call me at
607 731 8192.
Luv to everyone,
Gabi

Dear Friend,
Thanks for showing interest in Alternatives to Violence Project.
This project has been going on for over 30 years and is now all over the
world. The first workshops started right here in our own New York
Correctional Facilities. These workshops are experiential and work on
communication and cooperation skills that everyone can benefit from. The
next workshops are coming soon.
We plan to have AVP workshops April 18-20, 2008 at Auburn
Correctional Facility. Workshop hours are 3:00 -9 PM on Friday, 8:00 AM - 8
PM on Saturday and 8:00 – 4:00 PM on Sunday. We will gather at the Wall St.
gate each day to enter as a group. We plan to have four or five workshops
and will include both Basic and Advanced level workshops. If you know of
other people who might be interested in the AVP process and would like to
take a workshop, please let me know. The minimum age is 18. Clothing
should be loose and modest. Shoes must have backs and toes enclosed;
sneakers work well. We have been asked to avoid any green clothing or coats
as that is the color the inmates must wear. You will receive meals inside
the prison. If you cannot make these workshops, the next two workshops are
scheduled for June 20-22, 2008 and December 5-7, 2008.* *
.
Please let me know as soon as possible if you wish to attend
this three-day workshop. The final list of outside volunteers needs to be in
three weeks in advance so I need to know by March 28, 2008 at the very
latest to turn your names in for the gate pass. I will let you know as
soon as I know about cancellation. There will be an orientation during the
weekend for the people who have not been processed as volunteers. If you
need to go through the volunteer orientation and ID process, please let me
know so we can give the facility an accurate count. If you have not already
done so, you need to fill out a volunteer application and get it back to
Auburn Volunteer Services Office *several weeks* before the workshop. Call
Volunteer Services at 315-253-8401 and ask for an application. If you are a
registered volunteer at another facility, let me know that right away so
they can verify it. Call or e mail me with any questions you might have
about the program, prison experience, hospitality, regulations or anything
else. Please let me know if you have turned in an application so I can
check to make sure it is received and approved. Please give me your e mail
address and/or phone number so we can reach you. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Jill McLellan
