If my choices were between making Ithaca more dense or making car-free roads on a weekly basis, I would go with the later.
It certainly doesn't solve our problems and make us sustainable, but it would be a great measure in the right direction.
Short of everyone renting out their space to more people or subdividing their land to allow for more density, how do you envision increasing density being any better? The towns and cities have been built, and they could have been built better, but I don't see an easy way to change that now.
