Luzette, et. al.,
I am going to let this initial notice concern go and hope it all works
out for WPFW and our supporters. I believe that the committee appears to be
seeking, in the absence of a college degree, a MINIMUM of 10 years experience in
TOTAL, 5 of which should be managerial. A college degree and 5 years of
managerial experience would also suffice. I believe the notice reads:
"Education/experience: a college degree, or 10 years professional
employment in broadcasting, communications, journalism, or other relevant experience.
5 years of managerial experience."
I agree that such a skills portfolio would be optimal. However, we are
talking minimal standards here. Those who don't meet them often don't apply.
I just don't want us to box out good people who might be attracted to the
relatively lower salary we offer, but only have say 5 years of direct experience,
including relevant managerial duties. Just something to consider. (Again
WAMU is seeking a minimum of a college degree AND 10 years experience, but they
pay $100,000 more). There is no right or wrong answer here, and I think we
can all agree that the entire LSB will face one of its most daunting challenges
when it seeks to decide who its permanent GM should be.
I once again must remind that my intention here is not to engage in
personal debate, but rather to argue issues relevant to the future of the station.
For those of us who do not serve on a certain committee, the only time we
seem to have to discuss the thinking or direction of the various committees
occurs after an LSB meeting where committee reports are delivered. This is
particularly true since some of us serve on multiple, active committees. Perhaps
soon we can spend our time at LSB meetings discussing the philosophical
approaches being considered by a committee for LSB action and less on procedural
matters. One can only hope.
