Now that we have had our memories refreshed and put in
context of Ray's efforts to discuss issues relating to
the same group of citizens (prisoners) that was not
previously shunned in our our waiver policy, I
sincerely hope we are preparing to repeal this
"conflict of interest" policy.

Since this policy was agreed upon, a number of listener
members of the LSB have in fact violated it. After all
where did these ideas of having a programme - special
or not - come from? Paul Robeson, Neruda, Brown v
Board of Education, Living Newspaper and even our own
LSB show (and yes, Jim! the LSB show which was produced
by two listener members). The policy we have adopted
does not make a distinction in a way that would allow
for these ideas to come forward.

To have so many good ideas coming from listener members
is not at all surprising since we are all involved on
this board because we are all interested in radio
programming in one way or another. Further our
listeners expect us to help provide good programs. As
a matter of fact, I have read where LSB listener
members do specials at other stations.

So, to devise a policy that would stifle excellent
ideas such as the ones coming from Ray and others is
beyond my little brain. As a matter of fact, I too
have had to shut my brain and mouth on an idea to
develop, with some Caribbean listeners, a Public
Affairs on the Caribbean ....As I could find no one
else to lead on this project, I had to leave it
alone....Ooops! I must have violated that Gawdarn
policy!! >smile< I have seriously considered and
taking this idea to another radio station as I am sure
there is a need for this.

Further, I insist that the bylaws already deals with
any situation where a LSB listener member, by virtue of
their appointment as a programmer, becomes an unpaid
staff. There was absolutely no need for this "no
brainer" policy and we MUST repeal it so as to not
stifle good programme ideas.

I would suggest as a first step forward that this
matter be dealt with at Programming Committee where the
implications will be worked out and a recommendation be
provided for the next LSB.

  WHY?
Good Morning All -As Chair of the Programming
Committee, I agree w/ Ron that our committee should
make arecommendation
on the special program. Having said that, I don't
see any problem
withthis special program going forward, given that
Ray has stated he is
not running forre-election and that this issue is a
burning one.
Further, Ray is extremely qualifiedto produce this
program given his
contacts in and experience with the criminal
justicecommunity/system.I will put this issue on the
agenda for
September 23. I hope it can be resolved by
thecommittee and the LSB
in time for the program to be aired before the
elections.Have a
